The points are assessed against your driving record based on the date that violation was committed, not the conviction date.
If your driving record accumulates 11 or more points within an 18 month period, your license will be suspended or revoked. If you complete a DMV approved defensive driving class also known as the 6 hour class, you may be able to neutralize up to four points on your license. The defensive driving class can only be taken once every 18 months to receive the this benefit. If you have already taken the accident prevention course within the 18 months, regardless of whether you received a point reduction, you will not be able to reduce any points by taking the program again until 18 months has passed. Also you cannot apply the point reduction as a credit against future points.
